Have you ever had one of those weeks where you feel overwhelmed by money? You know you need to get your life in order, not because anything’s falling apart, but because you are?
That was me, late July.
I almost hosted one more Smart Money Reset webinar. But when I looked at my to-do list, I realized something I couldn’t ignore:
I had been pushing hard in every direction—
Except for the things that actually bring me peace.
Not business stuff.
Not the inbox.
Not the latest algorithm update.
I Needed a Sanity Week
I’m talking about the life things—the rhythms that calm my nervous system, steady my spirit, and remind me that I’m not behind…
I’m just human.
So I gave myself a sanity week.
And if you’ve never heard me use that term, here’s what it looks like in real life:
✅ I deep cleaned the house. Not surface-level wipe downs. I’m talking floors mopped, bathrooms scrubbed, baseboards cleaned kind of clean.
✅ Dishes? Done. Laundry? Not just washed—folded and put away. No baskets stacked in the corner whispering shame.
✅ Grocery shopping? Finished before the weekend. Fridge and pantry stocked for two hungry college kids home for the summer.
✅ My 4Runner? She’s lovingly referred to as My Tank
Washed and wiped like a treasure. She’s 13 years strong, and I saved three years to buy her. I call her my tank not because of my driving (although… a few family and friends might say otherwise), but because she’s carried me through every season. I care for her like she’s still new. If you ride with me, you take your cup with you when you leave—I don’t care if we’re in the church parking lot. 🙂
By the end of the week, my house felt calm.
My body felt quieter.
But my heart still felt unsettled.
When You’re Overwhelmed by Money…
Because I was procrastinating the one thing I knew I needed to do…
Our Spending Plan.
I hadn’t touched it since mid-May.
We went on a cruise, came home to summer – college kids home, girl days with my daughter, late night conversations with my boy, late night smores over the backyard firepit, and little trips for family fun.
These things fill my heart with joy and I told myself we were “fine.”
And technically, we were.
The money was there.
Nothing was bouncing or spiraling out of control.
But I didn’t feel secure.
I wasn’t doing my normal category check-ins. I had no real pulse on where our money was going.
And my nervous system? It was fried.
I was foggy. Irritated.
I didn’t feel grounded.
Tim kept asking, “Where are we at?”
And I kept saying, “We’re good. I’ll get it updated.”
But deep down, I knew – I didn’t have a clear answer.
A Quiet Breakdown and a Moment That Changed Me
Then one night—about two weeks ago—everyone was gone except my son.
I was feeling the weight of what’s coming in August:
- Tuition
- Insurance
- Travel multiple times for 3 months
- Car Maintenance
- Birthdays
- Not to mention the holidays
And I broke.
Tears. Overwhelm. Zero hiding it.
He walked in just as I lost it.
Now listen—this is the same kid who used to bolt when I cried. He doesn’t love emotional moments. But that night, he stayed.
He hugged me.
Quietly. No advice. No fixing. Just presence.
And then he said something I’ll hold in my heart forever:
“Mom, you’re doing a good job. It’s going to be fine.”
What a Personal Financial Reset Looks Like
And I believed him.
Because in that moment, I realized I wasn’t overwhelmed because something was wrong.
I was overwhelmed because I had stopped doing the things that keep me grounded.
I needed to get back to the numbers.
So this past Wednesday night, I sat down in the living room with my phone on silent and one tab open on my laptop.
I opened the budget.
Caught up on two months of tracking. UGH!
Mapped out the next five months.
Was it perfect? No.
Will we stick to it exactly? Probably not.
But now, I know what’s coming—and that gives me peace.
I planned for tuition, insurance, our daughter’s upcoming graduation from PA school in December, a long weekend with Tim, holiday travel, and all the life things in between.
A Conversation That Sparked a First Investment
And the sweetest part?
My son sat beside me.
We talked about money. He asked questions. He gave ideas. We looked back at the 17 years of intentional choices we’ve made as a family – and we both could see God’s hand through it all.
We even talked about investing.
He had already opened an account. He’d been doing research.
And that night, right there beside me on the couch—
He made his first investment.
Complete Confidence.
A Plan for Long Term Growth.
Because he’s seen what it looks like when someone takes responsibility for their future – with clarity, calm, and intention.
What I Want Every Woman to Know About Money
Even when he was little, just four years old, I know he felt the stress we were under. That was the season we got serious about debt. During his teen years, we flipped two house to pay for college and boost our retirement savings. We recently sold a home to fund a dream. We’ve built and rebuilt more times than I can count. Not because we love chaos (I have stories!) but because we had a vision. And we weren’t going to live our lives trapped in debt.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a “sanity week” and how can it help with money stress?
A sanity week is when I slow down and tackle the grounding tasks that bring margin to my life—like cleaning the house, restocking the fridge, and catching up on our spending plan. It helps clear the mental fog that builds when life (and money) feels unmanageable.
Q: What should I do if I feel overwhelmed by money, even if I make a good income?
You’re not alone. Many women I work with feel this way. The key isn’t earning more—it’s gaining clarity and control over where your money’s going. That’s where a simple spending plan comes in.
Q: Can budgeting help reduce anxiety?
Absolutely. When you know your numbers and have a plan, your nervous system calms down. It’s not about control—it’s about peace.
You don’t have to feel like a failure to want a reset.
You don’t have to be in a crisis to want clarity.
You just have to be honest enough to say:
“I don’t feel like myself. And I’m ready to get back to who I am.”
Friend, if that’s you—I see you.
I’ve been you.
And I’d be honored to walk with you.
You don’t need to have it all together.
You just need to take the first step.
Always cheering you on,
Melinda
