Have you ever looked at your income and thought…
We should be doing better than this. We make good money. Why does it feel like we can never get ahead?
Maybe you’ve been told that debt is normal, that it’s just part of life, or that you’ll always have a car payment and a mortgage. Maybe you’ve even been advised to borrow as much as possible—because “it’s smart to use other people’s money.”
But what if that advice is the very thing keeping you trapped?
Today I’m sharing what I’ve learned about Living Debt-Free over the last 15 years, it’s not what you hear in main stream media and popular social media posts.
Every time we were told to borrow the maximum we qualified for, we rejected that advice.
Every time we were encouraged to stretch our budget, we refused.
Because every dollar borrowed meant more time as a slave to the lender.
You don’t have to follow that path.
You don’t have to settle for 20–30 years of payments.
You don’t have to accept debt as just another bill you’ll always have.
You can choose something different.
You can choose freedom.
Start Small—But Start Right
Maybe you’ve been told that the only way to buy a home is to borrow every penny the bank will give you. That the only way to live comfortably is to finance it all.
But what if that’s the very thing keeping you stuck?
We didn’t take that approach.
Our first house wasn’t big. It wasn’t new. It wasn’t fancy. It was 50 years old.
But it was ours.
And more importantly—we could comfortably afford the mortgage, taxes, and insurance.
That decision changed everything.
When you borrow only what you can easily afford, you create margin.
When you reject the belief that you must stretch your budget to the max, you gain freedom.
When you choose to live below your means, you open the door to a future where debt doesn’t own you.
That first home? Financed for 15 years, we paid it off in six years.
Then we built and financed for 30 years and sold in six years… This was before I started learning about managing money. 🙂
What if Your Home Didn’t Own You?
Over the years, we’ve owned seven homes. Some were small. Some were built with sweat equity. Some were bought outright.
- Five started with mortgages—but every single one was paid off in seven years or less.
- The last two? We bought or built in cash.
- We’ve owned more homes than I have vehicles—because homes, when well-maintained, appreciate.
- Cars? They only lose value.
What if your home wasn’t a burden?
What if you owned it outright instead of it owning you?
What if you didn’t have to worry about payments, interest rates, or refinancing?
This isn’t just possible—it’s a choice you can make.
The next home we built financed for 15 years and paid it off in seven years…
What If You Had the Skills to Create Wealth Instead of Buy It?
A home isn’t just a place to live. It’s an investment. And the more you know, the more you save.
We didn’t just buy homes—we built skills.
- Three of our homes were built from the ground up.
- We learned how to do the work ourselves—because the more you know, the less you owe.
- Our kids grew up working along side us fixing, building, and watching us invest wisely—so when they buy a home, they won’t assume it has to be brand new and perfect.
They’ll know:
✔ How to fix things.
✔ How to make a house their own—without going into debt.
✔ That a home is about freedom, not just aesthetics.
They won’t buy based on emotions.
They won’t borrow every penny a lender offers.
They won’t enter homeownership as a slave to the lender.
And neither do you.
The first home we built and paid in cash…
If you would like to learn about those dumb decisions we made in the beginning, when our house building journey started – that story is here.
What If Life Didn’t Derail You?
Maybe you’ve been told, “Debt is just a part of life. What if something happens?”
But what if something happening is the very reason you shouldn’t have debt?
Because life will happen.
The unexpected will come.
And when it does, the last thing you need is a lender taking a cut of your paycheck before you even get a chance to breathe.
We lived on one income for more than 25 years.
We took a 25% pay cut when my husband left a stressful job—because our peace was worth more than a paycheck.
We faced dental braces and scoliosis treatment—diagnosed within a month of each other.
We covered medical emergencies, broken bones, and unexpected healthcare costs—without adding stress to an already hard season.
We stood beside my parents through cancer surgery and a life-threatening long-term care need.
We had a year where we spent more on dental than medical—and we still didn’t turn to debt.
We didn’t prepare ahead for our kids when they chose college programs that required more than four years—but we adjusted, and we’ve cash-flowed their undergrad without student loans.
👉 Every one of these moments could have been a financial crisis.
👉 Every one of these moments could have sent us into panic mode.
👉 Every one of these moments could have forced us to borrow just to get by.
But they didn’t.
Because we had margin.
Because we weren’t paying off debt, we could take care of what mattered most.
Because we weren’t locked into payments, we could choose what was best for our family—not what we could afford on credit.
Because we prepared, we didn’t have to make decisions out of desperation.
🚨 Because the truth is, when life happens, debt won’t save you.
It will only make a hard situation worse.
So ask yourself:
When the unexpected happens, do you want to be in control?
Or do you want to be wondering how you’ll make next month’s payment?
What If This Was the Year You Stopped Letting Debt Steal Your Future?
You have two choices today:
1️⃣ Keep living the way you are, hoping things will change.
2️⃣ Start making different choices today.
🚨 At some point, you have to decide: Will you spend the next 10, 20, or 30 years making payments… or will you make the changes that set you free?
Because if we could do this, so can you.
